August…oh the month of waiting! We are all waiting on Mother Nature to dictate our first day of harvest and this year she has been a little tricky. After following weeks of warm to hot weather, we all thought that we would be picking our first vineyard lot by August 18th, but for the past few days we have had a major cooling spell that leaves us to guess that maybe our first pick will be closer to August 25th. Because of the dry winter and spring, we are still ahead of our normal harvest date of Labor Day or thereafter.
So what do we do the weeks leading up to harvest? Like a chef getting ready for a big dinner, we prep! The fermenting room is comprised of 16 open tank fermenters, all sparkling clean, waiting to be filled with fresh juice. Our crush pad has been set up, tested, and ready for us to hand sort and crush grapes. All tractor and vineyard equipment is lined up and ready to go at a moment’s notice and the grapes are literally just hanging out. Day by day, our winemaker, Shelly, will be sampling each vineyard to test sugar levels and flavors of the berries to determine our start date.
The most enjoyable part of waiting for harvest is getting that last 2 day trip in, eating out at our favorite local restaurants, and simply appreciating some normal stress-free work days. We are very excited and anxious to see the fruit come in and until then we will cheers to a great 2014 harvest!
